From Military Logistics to Offshore Energy: What the IWCF Level 1 Programme Taught Me

There are moments in a career transition where you realise just how much you don’t know.

Over the last few weeks I’ve had the privilege of speaking with experienced Installation Offshore Managers (OIMs), engineers, and other professionals across the offshore energy sector. Every conversation reinforced the same message: before you can truly understand the operational side of the industry, you need to understand the fundamentals.

Several people recommended the International Well Control Forum (IWCF) Level 1 Programme as a structured way to get that broad overview. Today I’m pleased to say I’ve completed it.

Why I Took the Course

Coming from a military logistics background, I’ve spent my career managing operations, people, risk, and planning under pressure. Many of those skills are transferable, but offshore energy has its own language, processes, and technical foundations.

Rather than trying to absorb everything through conversations alone, I wanted a proper introduction that would help me see the bigger picture before diving into specialist areas. The IWCF Level 1 Programme delivered exactly that.

A Better Understanding of the Industry

One of the biggest takeaways wasn’t just new terminology — it was seeing how interconnected every part of offshore drilling operations really is.

The programme introduces well control, drilling operations, and the safety principles that underpin the entire industry. Even as an introductory course, it gives newcomers a framework for understanding the environment that offshore professionals work in every day. For someone looking to enter the sector, that context is invaluable.

It’s easy to hear technical terms in conversations or read articles without grasping how they actually fit together. This overview has already made those discussions far more meaningful.

Technology Beyond What I Expected

I was genuinely surprised by the level of technology involved. From drilling systems and real-time monitoring equipment to the engineering required for safe operations thousands of feet below the seabed, the industry is far more advanced than most outsiders realise. There’s serious innovation happening behind the scenes — much of it invisible to the wider public.

It’s a reminder that offshore energy isn’t just about extracting resources; it’s about solving some of the most complex engineering challenges in the world.

A New Appreciation for the People Behind It

Perhaps the biggest takeaway wasn’t technical at all.

It’s a greater appreciation for the people who actually make the industry work. Speaking with Offshore Installation Managers highlighted the responsibility they carry — not just for production, but for the safety and wellbeing of everyone on board.

Beyond them are the engineers, technicians, drilling crews, marine personnel, maintenance teams, and support staff who work long rotations in demanding environments, often away from their families for weeks at a time. Their work is rarely visible to those outside the industry, yet it underpins global energy systems. That deserves real recognition.

Learning Never Stops

Completing IWCF Level 1 doesn’t make me an expert — and it wasn’t meant to. What it has given me is confidence that I’m now asking better questions, understanding conversations more clearly, and building a stronger foundation for whatever comes next.

For anyone considering a move into offshore energy, I’d strongly recommend taking the time to understand the fundamentals first. The knowledge isn’t just useful — it changes the way you see the entire industry.
